Ernest Bazin roller ship. French inventor Ernest Bazin. This one has four pairs of disc-shaped floats that rotate as the craft moves through the water using propellers. A boat similar to this, called the Ernest-Bazin after its inventor, had three pairs of floats. It was launched at St Denis in 1896. However, the design was found to be impracticable and an attempt in 1897 to cross the Channel exposed flaws. Bazin died the next year in 1898. Artwork from the first volume (1897) of 'La Revue Scientifique et Industrielle' by French chemist and inventor Jules-Louis Breton (1872-1940).
