Ludvig Immanuel Nobel (1831-1888), Swedish industrialist. Nobel, with his brother Robert, operated extensive oil interests in Baku in what is now Azerbaijan. Their company, Branobel (founded 1876), became one of the largest oil companies in the world in the late 19th century. Innovations developed by Ludvig included one relating to oil tankers, refineries, and pipelines. His younger brother was Alfred Nobel, whose bequest in his will founded the Nobel Prizes, in part based on his share of investments in Branobel. Artwork from the third edition of 'Les Entrailles de la Terre' (1902) by French author Eugene Caustier.
