Eastern subterranean termite (Reticuliterme flavipes) soldier, about 8 mm in length and distinguished by its large head and jaws, patrolling nest looking for invaders. Termites are social insects that consume the wood used to build houses and other structures. Living in colonies that can number in the millions, these tiny insects cause billions of dollars of damage every year.
