Female pelvic anatomy, artwork. This sagittal section through the female body shows the anatomy of the pelvic region. The front of the body is at right. The bottom of the spine is at left. To the right of this is the rectum, the final part of the digestive system, which finishes at the anus. At upper centre is the uterus (womb, pink), the hollow organ where a fertilised egg implants and develops into a foetus. The uterus opens to the outside via the vagina, or birth canal. Below and to the right of the uterus is the bladder, which stores urine. It opens to the outside via the urethra. At right is the pubic bone (white). An ovary and fallopian tube (upper centre) are also shown.
