Heart and lung anatomy. Artwork showing the relative positions of the heart and lung within the chest. The heart (centre) lies between the two lungs either side. Here, in this frontal view, retractors have drawn back the lungs to show the heart and its major blood vessels (aorta, red; vena cava, blue; pulmonary vessels, purple). The heart and lung membranes (pericardium and pleura) have been partially removed. Below is the diaphragm (red). The two insets show the heart within the rib cage (top left) and an axial cross-section through the chest at the level of the heart (top right, spine at top).
