Kidney anatomy. Artwork of a sectioned kidney, showing its internal structure. The two kidneys filter waste such as urea from the blood and pass it to the bladder as urine. Blood arriving in the renal artery (red) is passed through filtering units (nephrons) in the outer area (cortex) of the kidney, and then leaves through the renal vein (blue). The waste products removed from the blood drain out of the kidney through the renal medulla (seven pyramidal red areas) and into the renal pelvis (centre) and into the ureter (white, lower right).
