Eye's optic nerve and retina. Artwork of a close-up of the optic nerve (yellow) and retina and its blood vessels. The area shown here is highlighted at upper left on a diagram of the whole eyeball. Light entering the eyeball impacts the retina after passing through the overlying layer of nerve tissue. The light then triggers the light-sensitive cells of the retina (blue, yellow and green). The resulting electrical signal passes along the nerves to the optic nerve, where it is transmitted to the brain and processed to produce the sensation of vision. Arteries (red) and veins (blue) supply the nerve and retina with blood.
