Intestinal nerve layers. Artwork of the layers of the small intestine, including nerves (yellow) and blood vessels (arteries; red, veins, blue). These nerves (the enteric plexus) are part of the autonomic nervous system. From inner to outer, the layers (separated by three nerve plexus layers) are: the mucosa, the muscularis mucosae, the submucosa, the submucous plexus, the circular (short-pitch helicoidal) layer, the myenteric plexus, the longitudinal (long-pitch helicoidal) layer, the muscular layer, the subserosa, the subserous plexus, and the serosa (outer serous membrane).
