Large intestine. Artwork of the large intestine, one of the final parts of the human digestive system. It starts at the caecum (lower left), the location of the ileocaecal valve between the large and small intestines. The large intestine consists of the ascending colon (left), the transverse colon (across top), the descending colon (right), the sigmoid colon (lower right) and the rectum (lower centre). The rectum ends in the anus (bottom centre). Also shown are parts of the mesentery (yellow), the connective tissue supporting the abdominal organs. At centre is the lower part of the abdominal aorta, shown branching into the iliac arteries.
