Spinal cord membrane anatomy. Artwork of a vertebra and an axial section through the spinal cord (white-grey) and its meninges (membranes). The same three membranes enclose the spinal cord and brain, both part of the central nervous system (CNS). From inner to outer, they are: the pia mater (green), the arachnoid mater (purple), and the dura mater (green). Spinal nerves (yellow) branch off from the spinal cord. The space between the pia mater and arachnoid mater (subarachnoid space) contains cerebrospinal fluid and filaments called arachnoid trabeculae (purple). The epidural space contains fatty tissue (white-yellow).
