Spinal cord anatomy. Artwork of a rear view of a human figure, with a coronal section through the vertebral column to show the spinal cord (yellow) encased in its meninges (membranes, green). The spinal cord is supported and enclosed by the vertebrae (beige) that make up the vertebral column or backbone. The spinal cord runs from the pelvis and sacrum (bottom) to the base of the brain (top) in the skull, where it joins with the medulla oblongata, the lower part of the brainstem. The lower end of the spinal cord is called the cauda equina.
