Lumbar vertebra. Artwork of a lumbar vertebra, one of the blocks of bone that together form the vertebral column or backbone. This view is from above with the rear of the body at top. The space (vertebral foramen) at centre is where the spinal cord is housed. The main body of the vertebra is at lower centre. Back muscles and ligaments attach to the processes (protruding areas). Cartilage (blue) marks where the vertebra's processes articulate with the adjoining vertebra above it. Intervertebral discs are not shown. There are five lumbar vertebrae, found in the lower back where they play a role in supporting the body's weight.
