Femur and patella. Artwork of a frontal view of a human femur (thigh bone) and patella (kneecap, bottom), with cartilage (blue) marking where they articulate with other bones. The head of the femur (top) fits into a socket in the hip bone of the pelvis, forming the hip joint. The head of the femur is connected to the shaft by a neck. The two protrusions here are the greater trochanter and lesser trochanter. The lower end of the femur consists of two oblong structures, the medial condyle and lateral condyle. The patella is a sesamoid bone that articulates with the femur and forms part of the knee joint which it helps to protect.
