Femur. Artwork of a rear view of a human femur (thigh bone), with cartilage (blue) marking where it articulates with other bones. The head of the femur (top) fits into a socket in the hip bone of the pelvis, forming the hip joint. The head of the femur is connected to the shaft by a neck. The two protrusions here are the greater trochanter and lesser trochanter. The lower end of the femur consists of two oblong structures, the medial condyle and lateral condyle. These articulate with similar structures on the upper end of the tibia (not shown) in the lower leg, forming the knee joint.
