Bones of the foot. Artwork of a superior (from above) view of the bones of the foot, with cartilage (blue) seen on the talus bone. This bone articulates above with the fibula and tibia, the bones of the lower leg, forming the lower part of the ankle joint. The bone at lower right is the calcaneus (heel bone). These two bones, plus five others (cuboid, centre right; navicular, centre left; and three cunieform bones, centre to centre left), form what is called the tarsus. At upper centre are the five metatarsals. Across top are the phalanges of the foot (14 toe bones). There are a total of 26 bones in the foot.
