Bones of the foot. Artwork of a lateral (side) view of the bones of the foot, with cartilage (blue) seen on the talus bone. This bone articulates above with the fibula and tibia, the bones of the lower leg, forming the lower part of the ankle joint. The bone at lower left is the calcaneus (heel bone). These two bones, plus five others (cuboid, navicular, and three cunieform bones), form what is called the tarsus. In the middle of the foot are the five metatarsals. At far right are the phalanges of the foot, the toe bones. There are a total of 26 bones in the foot.
