Knee ligaments. Computer artwork of a human knee joint, showing the bones (white) and ligaments (purple). The knee joint is formed by the articulation of the femur (thigh bone, top) with tibia (shin bone, bottom centre). The smaller fibula (bottom left) is also seen. Articular cartilage (blue), which protects the bone surface from wear and tear, is seen on the head of the tibia. At centre, arranged like a letter X, are the cruciate ligaments, which stabilise the knee joint while allowing a large range of motion.
