Skeletal muscle. Transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a section through a skeletal muscle fibre. Muscle fibres are filled with highly ordered myofibrils consisting of repeating units of contractile protein filaments. Each unit of contraction is called a sarcomere (rectangular) and is the basic cellular component for muscle contraction. Magnification: x4,000 when printed 10 centimetres tall.
