Yeast enzyme. Molecular model of a 20s proteosome enzyme from yeast complexed with the proteasome activator (PA26) from the protozoan Trypanosoma brucei. This is the 20S proteasome. A proteasome is a complex type of proteinase (protein-digesting enzyme). The barrel-shaped structure consists of four ring layers, forming a central space down the middle where the catalytic protein breakdown takes place. Binding by PA26 opens this channel allowing proteins to enter.
