USS Alabama, World War II battleship. This US Navy ship, launched and commissioned in 1942, was built at Norfolk Naval Shipyard, Virginia, USA. It is 210 metres long, carried a crew of 1793, and was equipped with 75 naval guns of various sizes. It saw action in World War II, mostly in the Pacific sphere of battle, with the ship and crew awarded nine US Navy battle stars. The ship was decommissioned in 1947, and struck from the naval register in 1962. It was turned into a museum ship, permanently moored at Battleship Memorial Park, Mobile, Alabama, USA, opening in 1965. It was made a National Historic Landmark in 1986.
