Micrasterias desmids. Polarised light micrograph of three species of Micrasterias desmid green algae. The smallest cells are Micrasterias americana, the mid-sized cells are Micrasterias apiculata and the largest cells are Micrasterias rotata. Desmids are a common group of freshwater single-celled algae that have intricate cell walls. Micrasterias is highly adapted to nutrient poor, acidic water. Magnification: x40, when printed 10 centimetres wide.
