Mass of slugs on grass. Slugs are gastropod molluscs that do not have shells. They feed on a variety of plants and can be pests on crops and garden plants. They are most active at night and when it is wet and can do an immense amount of damage. Slugs produce mucus to help them move around, retain moisture and deter predators.
