Asteroids and extrasolar planet. Artwork of asteroids approaching an extrasolar planet (centre right). Asteroids are rocky bodies orbiting within a planetary system. They vary in size from tens of metres across to more than a hundred kilometres across. Large asteroids impacting a planet can cause mass loss of life. Such impacts are more common in the early history of a planet.
