Native American shell money. Man measuring a string of dentalia shells. These shells were commonly used as money by Native American tribes. They were collected along the Pacific coast, but used throughout the continent. This man is from the Tolowa, a tribe from northwestern California and southern Oregon. Photographed circa 1923.
