Tawny owl perched on a log at night. Tawny owls (Strix aluco) are nocturnal birds that inhabit open woodlands throughout Europe and parts of Asia, where they hunt rodents such as mice and voles. It is this owl that has the hooting call most commonly associated with owls. Photographed in Dorset, UK, in August.
