Faraday experiment on magnetism. Photographic plate from the notebooks of British physicist Michael Faraday (1791-1867), showing the results of an experiment using iron filings to study magnetic fields generated by magnets. This photographic plate, part of a set of two (see also C015/4902), dates from 11 November 1851. Faraday made several major advances in the fields of magnetism and electricity, devising the first electric motor and equipment such as transformers and dynamos. He worked at the Royal Institution, London, UK.
