Hairy scalp skin. Light micrograph of a section through healthy skin from a human scalp, showing the numerous hair follicles. The scalp is an example of hairy skin. The epidermis of hairy skin is a thin epithelial layer superficial to a very deep connective tissue dermis (blue-green) into which hair follicles and hair shafts penetrate. The hypodermis shows collections of fat cells (empty-looking spaces). Hair follicles are downward derivatives of the epidermis. Magnification: x8 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
