Caption

Excisionase complex with DNA. Molecular model of three excisionase proteins (bottom, red, yellow and pink) bound to a strand of DNA (top, deoxyribonucleic acid). This exisionase protein is called Xis. The proteins have produced a slight curve in the DNA strand, which helps orientate it correctly for further stages in the intasome processes that integrate and excise genetic material. Excisionase is a bacteriophage protein, in this case from the Enterobacteria lambda phage that infects Escherichia coli bacteria.
