Tyre fire. Flames and smoke at a fire at a tyre dump. The black smoke is caused by soot or unburnt particles of carbon. Tyres are made from mineral oil products and burn readily. In many cases they are not recycled when their useful life is over and are simply dumped in landfill sites. Fires at these sites are a major health hazard because of the toxic chemicals released by the tyres, particularly polychlorinated biphenols (PCBs).
