Homer, Ancient Greek poet, thought to have been the author of the Iliad and the Odyssey. He is thought to have been active during the 8th century BC, but little is known for certain about his life. Some scholars question whether one person wrote both the epic poems which which he is credited. The Iliad deals with the Trojan War between the Greeks and the inhabitants of Troy. The Odyssey tells of the travels of the Greek hero Odysseus as he returns home after the Trojan War. The Homeric Hymns, a series of poems praising the Greek gods, is also credited to Homer. This artwork of a marble bust is from 'Histoire des Grecs' (1889).
