Crater lake. View of a bright blue crater lake in the caldera of Maly Semyachik, an active volcano. The lake is highly acidic and is heated by the volcano. The bright blue colour of the lake is due to the complex combinations of chemicals present in the water. Maly Semyachik is 1560 metres (5118 feet) high and is part of the Karymsky group of volcanoes on Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula.
