Artificial quartz. Crystals of artificial quartz being removed from an autoclave. The autoclave contains a hot saturated solution of sodium silicate. Once it is sealed, the heat in the autoclave is slowly reduced until the solution becomes supersaturated. At this point crystallisation starts. The method provides large, perfect crystals for scientific use. Photographed in Chelyabinsk, Russia.
