Platypus (Ornithorhynchus anatinus) swimming. This semi-aquatic mammal is endemic to eastern Australia and Tasmania. Together with the four species of echidna, it is one of five species of monotremes - mammals that lay eggs. A spur on the hind legs of the males is used to deliver a venom.
