Displacement reaction. Flames resulting from a reaction between magnesium metal and copper oxide. This displacement reaction occurs if the magnesium & copper oxide are heated together. The magnesium, being more reactive, will react with the copper oxide to form magnesium oxide and copper metal. This leads to liberation of enough heat to cause flames.
