Heinz bodies. Light micrograph showing Heinz bodies (red), inclusion of denatured haemoglobin, within red blood cells (erythrocytes). Heinz bodies are caused by oxidative damage to the haemoglobin. This damage can be due to a number of factors, including liver disease, anaemia or the use of certain drugs. Treatment is of the underlying cause.
