Listeriosis. Light micrograph of a section through a placenta in a case of listeriosis. This rare infection by the Listeria monocytogenes bacteria is usually due to food poisoning. The bacteria then spread throughout the body and damage nervous tissue (including the brain and spinal cord), and other organs. In pregnant women, the disease often causes miscarriage or stillbirth.
