Magnesium ribbon burning in air. Magnesium (Mg) is a semi-soft, silvery-white alkaline earth metal. When heated, it will burn with a brilliant white flame. This property has been utilized in emergency flares, photographic flash bulbs and fireworks. It is the eight most abundant metal in the Earth's crust, but it is not found in its elemental form.
