Caption

Flame test on sodium. Sodium compounds give a distinctive yellow colour when placed in a flame. Sodium (symbol Na) is a metallic element of group one of the periodic table. Flame tests are used to identify metal ions in a compound, as many metal ions show specific different colours. A paper roll is used to hold the sample in the flame, as it does not colour the flame itself.
