Poppy seed capsule. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a section through the seed capsule from an opium poppy (Papaver somniferum), showing chloroplasts (green) and tracheid cells (spiral tubes) of the vascular bundle. At bottom the spongy mesophyll cells (sponge-like) store a milky sap, which contains up to 40 different psychoactive alkaloids, including morphine, codeine, papaverine and noscapine. Magnification: x530, when printed 10 centimetres wide.
