Vladimir Mikhailovich Komarov (1927-67), Russian-Soviet cosmonaut. Komarov is at right, at left is Deputy Prime Minister of the USSR Konstantin Rudnev. This was photographed after Komarov's flight on the Voskhod 1 spaceflight of 12-13 October 1964. Voskhod 1 was the first space mission to carry three people into orbit, the first conducted without spacesuits and the first to carry an engineer. Komarov was killed on 24 April 1967 when the experimental Soyuz-1 capsule he was flying suffered several malfunctions, including failure of the parachute system. Photographed in Moscow on 26 December 1964.
