Computer simulation of heat conduction in a solid. The solid is represented by spheres (atoms) connected with springs (bonds between atoms). Initially the atoms vibrate randomly, before the left side is heated (red) and the right side cooled (blue). This sets up a temperature gradient from left to right. Heat manifests as increased vibration of the atoms and bonds, causing the atoms to displace more from their equilibrium position. This affects the atoms around them, energising them in turn, leading to the heat travelling from left to right.
