Ultra-high-speed footage of the formation of a lightning strike. The lightning starts with numerous faint leaders, which are illuminated by short-lived but bright recoil leaders. The leader channels continue until they reach the ground, where the main discharge occurs. Filmed at more than 7200 frames per second in South Dakota, USA, in summer.
