Eyeball muscles. Artwork of the right-hand side of a skull with the eyeball removed to show the origin of the muscles (red) of the orbital socket (the extraocular muscles). These muscles are the levator palpebrae superioris muscle that raises the upper eyelid, and six other muscles that control the movement of the eyeball. Four of these control movements up, down, left and right: superior rectus, inferior rectus, lateral rectus, medial rectus. The final two are the superior oblique and inferior oblique muscles.
