Balloon angioplasty. Angiogram (X-ray) of the leg of a 69 year old patient undergoing a balloon angioplasty to treat stenosis (narrowing) of the popliteal artery. A balloon catheter (white tube) has been guided into place by a flexible catheter (white line). Inflating the balloon opens the artery and restores normal blood flow. The most common cause of stenosis is atheroma, fatty deposits that thicken the inner coat of arteries.
