Atrophic gastritis. Endoscopic view of atrophic cells in the lining (mucosa) of the gastric fundus of a patient's stomach. Atrophy is the shrinkage or wasting away of cells as a result of disease. Atrophic gastritis may develop following chronic gastritis, which is associated with smoking and long term alcohol abuse, or spontaneously as an autoimmune disease.
