Lingual nerve block. Artwork of a syringe being used to inject a local anaesthetic to numb the lingual nerve, a procedure known as a nerve block. This nerve provides sensation (including taste) for the front two-thirds of the tongue, and via the the submandibular ganglion the submandibular and sublingual glands. This nerve block is one of several that allow minor mouth surgery, including dental work. The injection is applied below the gumline of the second mandibular molar.
