Ultra-high-speed footage of a lightning strike, showing the stepped leaders heading towards the ground, forming a channel through which the main discharge occurs. This channel sees two discharges, although in many cases there are four or five or more. The repeated discharges are what gives lightning its flickering appearance to the naked eye. Filmed at 1000 frames per second in South Dakota, USA, in summer.
