Caption

Air-to-air missile test. A Soviet MiG-21F 'Fishbed' fighter launching an air-to-air interceptor missile during a test. The missile is a development version of the Kaliningrad R-8 (NATO reporting name AA-3 'Anab'), a medium-range missile developed to intercept enemy bombers. The AA-3 was mainly used by Sukhoi Su-15 'Flagon' and Yakovlev Yak-28P 'Firebar' long-range fighters. It had a range of 23km and a top speed of Mach 2, with versions fitted with either semi-active radar homing or infrared heat seeking guidance. Photographed in 1974.
