Frontispiece of 'Arithmetika' ('Arithmetics') by the Russian mathematician Leonty Filippovich Magnitsky (1669-1739). This book was first published in 1703 with 2,400 copies printed. It soon became the single most important book on the subject and served as the standard Russian text for more than 50 years. It was unusual in that it resembled an encyclopaedia more than a text book - much of its content was written in a literary prose style. Photographed at the Russian State Library in 1970.
