Macrophage membrane extensions. Animation showing a macrophage white blood cell extending lamellipodia. Lamellipodia are thin sheets of filaments that stretch out from the cell. These movements are directed by a complex cytoskeleton apparatus within the cell. Macrophages are a key part of the immune system. Lamellipodia extend in the direction of chemical gradients that indicate the presence of a pathogen.
